Acrobat Reader software & hardware requirements

Many electronic reserve materials are in Acrobat PDF file format. Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0 or newer is required (if you use Internet Explorer, version 5.0 or newer is required). You can download this free software from Adobe's Web site.

Before installing the new software, uninstall any older versions of the Adobe Acrobat Reader program. Click here for help installing the program.

System requirements for each version of the Acrobat Reader software vary. Please see Adobe Acrobat Reader - System Requirements for current information.

You also need Netscape Navigator 4.0 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (or newer versions).

Reading:

  • Size: The minimum and maximum zoom levels available depend on the current page size. In the lower left corner, you will see a percentage. This tells you if the page is at 100%, 170%, etc. Clicking on the down arrow next to the percentage allows you to change the size of the loaded page. Acrobat Reader 5 will often load the page at 150% or larger. In some cases, this decreases the quality of the text on the screen. By changing the magnification to a smaller percentage the document often becomes more legible. Other methods of resizing the page include the Zoom-in tool (magnifying glass) or Fit buttons (page with corner folded over) in the command bar at the top of the reading.

  • File size: File size helps determine quality, downloading, and printing time of the finished product. We continue to work on making our files as compact as possible. One way of achieving this is to split large, multi-page documents into smaller segments. Please be alert to one title with several sets of pages listed.

  • Next Page: To go to another page, click the Next Page button in the top command bar or bottom status bar. To go to the previous page, click the Previous Page button in the command or status bar, or use the scroll bar along the side of the page.

  • Broken links: URLs sometimes change and we are not always notified. Please help us out and alert us to broken links.

  • Help with Adobe Acrobat Reader: See the Support page.

NOTE: The quality and legibility of a scanned image will vary when displayed as a PDF file on your computer screen, based on a variety of factors. These include: the quality of the original document, the settings used when the document was scanned, and the resolution of your monitor. If you are attempting to read a PDF document on your screen, familiarize yourself with the various "View" options of the Acrobat Reader, especially those which permit magnification. If the document remains difficult to read on screen, try printing it as the printed version is often more legible.

Downloading

  • To download a PDF document to a disk: click on the disk button or File> Save As. Specify the disk drive, the file name, and the "save as" type. Click the Save button. To read it later, first open in Acrobat Reader, then open the file.

Printing:

  • Printing PDF Files: Click on the Adobe Print Icon on the toolbar directly above the document text. If desired, specify the page range, number of copies and other options then click OK.

  • Sometimes a PDF file will print as a "mirror image" of the original. If this happens, select File>Print and then make sure that the "Print As Image" option is chosen. The file should then print accurately.

  • For more information see the Adobe Acrobat ReaderTechnical Guide printing section

Printing from Web Documents: Links to commercial, full-text indexes may be listed on e-Reserve courses instead of PDF files. Some may have frames or issues which cause printing difficulties. If you encounter problems printing, please ask library staff for assistance.

Placing Materials on Reserve

How to place materials on reserve

All materials must be submitted with a Reserve Request Form:

Online Submission Form
Attach files for reserve using this form

Word format
Save this form and send it as an attachment

Acrobat PDF format
Use this form if you plan on bringing your materials to the library by hand.

Hard-copy reserve materials:

  • Materials from Hamersly Library's collection: Provide the title and call number. Items acquired through Summit or Interlibrary Loan are not eligible to be on hard-copy reserve.
  • Personally-owned items: Bring materials to the Checkout Desk. Items must be legitimate copies, either commercially produced or something to which you have copyright.
  • Photocopies: Book chapters, articles, notes, or solutions. Consider or discuss with library staff whether eReserves is a better option. If photocopies are necessary, include the source citation on each article or chapter. Mail or bring photocopies to the library Checkout Desk.
