BI 315 Cell Biology: Writing and Citing

Citing for Cell Biology

For this class, you are using the citation style utilized by the Journal of Cell Biology (JCB). JCB uses a modified CSE style and a whole lot of journal abbreviations. Use the resources on this page to help you get your styles right.

Journal Abbreviations

PubMed lists the abbreviated titles of many journals. This list is the official list used by many major publications, including the Journal of Cell Biology.

JCB Citation Style

JCB style vs. CSE style

While very similar to the CSE Name-Year style, there are some key differences between JCB style and CSE Name-Year: The examples below have the differences highlighted.

JCB Style:

Di H, L. Ye, H. Yan, H. Meng, S. Yamasak, and L. Shi. 2014. Comparative analysis of CRISPR loci in different listeria monocytogenes lineages. Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 454:399-403. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.bbrc.2014.10.018.

CSE Name-Year (8th ed):

Di H, Ye L, Yan H, Meng H, Yamasak S, Shi L. 2014. Comparative analysis of CRISPR loci in different listeria monocytogenes lineages. Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 454(3):399-403.
