ASA Style Guide: Paper Formatting

Order and Form of Paper

Title Page

Includes:

  • A full title
  • The name and institution of the author(s)
  • A running head
  • The word count
  • A title footnote

Abstract

  • Begins on a separate page
  • Includes the title of the paper as its heading
  • Leaves out the author's name
  • Is restricted to one paragraph (no more than 200 words)

Key Words

  • Choose three to five key words for indexing purposes

Text

  • Should begin on a new page
  • Has the title as the header
  • Omit author identification throughout
  • Footnotes, appendixes, tables, and figures are in separate sections

Footnotes

  • Placed as text at the end of the manuscript
  • Must be indicated by superscripted numbers
  • Limited to 100 words (each)

Reference List

  • Follows the text and footnotes
  • Separate section headed References
  • Should be double-spaced

Subheadings

THIS IS A FIRST-LEVEL HEAD

This Is a Second-Level Head

This is a third-level head

Quotes

Quotes containing 50 words or more should be indented in a separate paragraph and contain no quotation marks.
