The article reports on how Union Army brigadier general John Buford with his troops fought and put down Confederate major general Robert E. Reynolds saw the chief of his cavalry advance, military personnel John Buford, perched in the seminary's cupola with a commanding view of the field. According to Buford's signal officer, military general Aaron Jerome, who was also in the tower, Reynolds called up to the gravelly voiced Kentuckian, "What's the matter, John?"
