Scan & Deliver Service

Scan & Deliver is a service that the library provides to patrons for easy access to physical materials. Library staff will scan and electronically share  requested journal article or book sections with your WOU email account.

Faculty/staff may also place a request to have this service done for a personally-owned item that they intend to use for classroom purposes (e.g. the first chapter of required textbook that students may read while waiting to obtain their own copy)

Alternatively, if a faculty/staff member would like a greater amount of a textbook to be available to their students, please consider either our physical or CDL course reserve services.

Please see the copyright section below for examples of acceptable digitization amounts for our Scan & Deliver service.

Copyright Guidelines

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the reproduction is not to be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research. If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that use may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgement, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Scan & Deliver Digitization Limits

Examples of acceptable limits: Examples of non-acceptable limits:
  • 10-15% of a textbook(e.g. 1-2 chapters)
  • 1-2 articles from a single journal
  • Pre-1924 works
  • 50% or more of a text
  • More than a small portion of educational testing materials

To conform to the above statements, ensure we can provide services to all patrons, and maintain efficient procedures during this crisis, please observe the following guidelines:

Place a Scan and Deliver Request

To place a Scan & Deliver request for an item that the library owns, you may do so from the library catalog. You will need to be logged in to see this option. The item must not be checked out already.

  1. Open the Item Details pane by clicking on the material you're placing a request for. In the 'Get It' section click on the 'Request Options' link (image 1). You'll be taken to a new screen asking you what type of request you're making.
  2. Select the option to have a portion of the materials digitized and sent to you, and press 'Submit' (image 2).
  3. Lastly, you'll be taken to the digitization request form page with your details and the item details already filled in. In the 'Notes' section at the bottom, please fill in the chapter, section, or page ranges you need.

If the request is in excess of what the library can fulfill within copyright restrictions, the library will contact you.

If you have any questions, please contact the library Information Desk at 503-838-8418
