SPAN 443 - Gender Identity & Political Resistance in Latin America: Quick Start

Finding Resources for Your Essays

Welcome to the SPAN 443 Research Guide. This guide will help you find books and articles to use for your essays in this class. This tab will get you started with finding books using the main library search, and finding articles using MLA International Bibliography and Humanities Abstracts, JSTOR, and Google Scholar.  Each section below has a video How-To to help you with your searching.

The "Finding Scholarly Articles & Books" tab goes into more detail about some advanced strategies that will help you in your search for scholarly sources about the novels. The final tab, "Citation & Writing Help" offers resources for formatting for in-text citations and Works Cited page.

Your essays in this class allow you to use any credible sources (not limited to scholarly), which opens up more options BUT also means you need to make sure you are evaluating every source your consider carefully. Start by asking questions:

  • Who is the author of this information? (What are their credentials/authority? What else have they written? What’s their reputation?)
  • What is the site/publication? (What is their reputation? What is their bias?)
  • Where did they get the information? (What are the sources? Are they referenced somehow? If so, are they credible? Are they varied?)

If you have any questions or need help, please feel free to contact me, your Humanities librarian:
