Open Educational Resources (OER): WOU OER Stipend Program FAQs

WOU OER Stipend Program FAQ

How long will it take me to redesign my course using OER?

You should probably give yourself 10-15 hours to redesign your course. This assumes you’ll be using an open textbook, or other open material, that already contains the content you need for your course. If you need to pull together content from various sources or create your own content, the amount of time you’ll need could increase substantially.

How long will it take me to complete the online training required by the stipend program?

If you just read the material in the online tutorial straight through, it might take you 1-2 hours. The training, though, assumes you’ll work through your course redesign as you move through the modules. You can expect to spend an additional 2-3 hours beyond the 10-15 hours referenced above. The total time, then, you can expect to spend to complete your project is 12-18 hours.

Again, though, that assumes you’ll be using an open textbook, or other open material, that already contains the content you need for your course. If you need to pull together content from various sources or create your own content, the amount of time you’ll need could increase substantially.

Can two or more instructors apply for an award for the same course? (Example: Multiple instructors teach Math 110)

Yes. Each instructor needs to complete a separate application.

Can I apply for more than one award in one year?

Yes, but you must complete a separate application for each award.

Can I apply for an award if I've received an award previously?

Yes. You can receive an award in multiple years.

What licensing am I required to use if I create an OER?

You are required to share all your work under a Creative Commons license, which you'll choose toward the end of completing your project.

By using a Creative Commons license, you retain copyright ownership, while at the same time giving others permission to use the work.

For a brief presentation on adding open licenses to your content, please see Open Licenses Step by Step.
