Citing in Chemistry

Zotero

Zotero (pronounced "zoh-TAIR-oh") is a Firefox addon that allows you to collect, manage, and cite sources.

Zotero will run on any operating system. It requires Mozilla Firefox 3.0 or greater. Installation only takes a few seconds. To install:

  1. Get ZoteroGo to http://www.zotero.org/ and download Zotero.
  2. When you see the message “Firefox prevented this site from asking you to install software on your computer," click "Allow".
  3. Restart Firefox. You'll see a small Zotero button at the bottom of your Firefox window. If you don't see the button, look for Zotero in the Tools menu.
  4. If you plan on using Zotero on WOU computers, go to Tools > Add-ons and click on Zotero, then on the Preferences button that will appear. Set up the Sync function with your free Zotero account (if you didn't create one when you installed, go to zotero.org and do it). Alternatley, you can change your Data Directory Location (under the advanced tab) to somewhere on your "H Drive" or a thumb drive. Details are availabe here.
  5. Download the ACS Nano style and you will be ready to go!

If you work mostly on a personal laptop or home computer, you'll probably also want to download and install the Microsoft Word citation plugin (or the OpenOffice plugin if you're using OpenOffice). These allow you to easily cite items from your Zotero library in your papers.
