Course Reserves

Course Reserves - For Faculty

The library provides various methods for all students in a class to share access to materials. Each method has different advantages and honors appropriate copyright laws and guidelines.

  • Physical reserves may be in various forms (print books, DVDs, kits, etc.). They are items either owned by the library or loaned from the instructor, and are appropriate for in-person and hybrid courses. The instructor selects an appropriate loan length for each item.
  • Digital reserves are books which are either owned by the library or loaned from the instructor, and are appropriate for hybrid and online courses. These are physical items which the library digitizes for your course and have restricted access (controlled digital lending). These are not the same as eBooks from a vendor.
  • Scan & Deliver service is appropriate for one-time needs by both staff and students when they cannot come into the library to view the material in-person. There are limitations to the number of pages that can be scanned and emailed.

If there is an item you would like placed on course reserve, please follow the steps outlined as part of either the 'Physical Reserves' or 'Digital Reserves' process:

  • For department or individually owned materials, please deliver the items and your forms to the Checkout Desk, or feel free to send them via campus mail.
  • For library owned items, our staff will pull and process them once a reserves form has been received.

For any questions, please contact the Checkout Desk at 503-838-8902

Course Expiration

When the course reserve materials reach the expiration date listed in the reserves form, the materials will either be returned to the faculty/department, or placed back in their respective collection.

If you or someone from your department will be teaching the course long-term, please write in a later 'course end' date (e.g. 1-3 years). This helps cut down on delays as a result of items being mailed to faculty at the end of one term and submitted again for the next.

At any point, faculty may come in or call the Checkout Desk to have their personally owned items removed from Course Reserves and returned to them.
