General Guidelines for Citing ChatGPT/Gemini or Other AI Tools

If you use generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or other AI tools, you should describe how you used the tools in your methods or comparable section. If you do not have a methods section, you should describe how you used AI in your introduction.

Citing ChatGPT/Gemini or Other AI Tools In-text

  • In a signal phrase, quote the prompt you used
  • Identify the generative AI tool you used.
  • Either directly quote the response or paraphrase the information.
  • In parenthesis, include the company behind the AI tool and year you entered the prompt)

Here is an example from ChatGPT:

DIRECT QUOTE

When the following prompt was entered, "Did the Stegosaurus live at the same time as the T-rex?" into ChatGPT, the program responded that the "Stegosaurus lived during the Late Jurassic period, about 155 to 150 million years ago. T-Rex lived much later, during the Late Cretaceous period, around 68 to 66 million years ago. That’s a gap of roughly 80 million years between them" (OpenAI, 2024).

PARAPHRASE

When prompted, "Did the Stegosaurus live at the same time as the T-rex?" Chat GPT noted that the Stegosaurus lived 155 to 150 million years in the Late Jurassic period while the Tyrannosaurus rex lived 68 to 66 million year ago in a different era known as the Late Cretaceous period (OpenAI, 2024).
